Snow is not usually a major problem in the UK, but the past two years have brought some harsh cold snaps and some heavy snow and this is looking to continue in the next few weeks. When heavy snowis laying on the ground and strong winds are brought into the equation then snow drifts can occur.
There are many reasons why we would want to install a fence to reduce snow drifts. One reason would be to increase visibility and keep lanes open on roads or motorways. Another reason would be to stop snow driftingorsurrounding a propertythus blocking access tothe house or property. This would usually happen if the property is situatednext to a large open field in a rural area when winds can move snow accross teh area and the first place for the snow to stop is the property.
Timber fence panels can be installed as a way to stop drifts around properties or driveways. A traditional way of stopping snow from drifting onto roads is by using cleft chestnut fencing. If the fence is placed 35 times the distance of the height of the fence back from the road then this should dramatically reduce the drift. This happens because the wind speed and energy is reduced causing the snow to drop and cause a drift to occur in front and behind of the fence but leaving the road clearer.
A point to take into consideration is to make sure that the chestnut fencing is not too close to the road as this could make the drifting on the road worse.
