Ferrofluid is a type of liquid that is composed of tiny magnetic particles. This unique fluid substance has magnetic properties like a solid, and it is actually a mixture of carrier fluid, magnetic solids and a surfactant. It is used in art displays, medicine, commercial industries and education, and it can be customized by adjusting the level of magnetization and viscosity to make a fluid that is ideal for certain applications.
In the 1960s, scientists at NASA were looking for a different way to move liquid fuel, so they developed a magnetic fluid that could be controlled by applying a magnetic field. As a result of this discovery, a company was established several years later to produce ferrofluid for commercial use.
There are different types of ferrofluids with various formulas, but magnetite, a type of iron oxide, is commonly used to make this substance. Tiny magnetite particles are coated with a surfactant, such as oleic acid, to keep them from gathering into a mass. The surfactant is a dispersing agent that keeps particles separated by creating an electrostatic repulsion between them. This basically means that the magnetite particles have a surrounding layer with a positive charge, and this prevents them from coming into contact with each other. These two components, magnetite and the surfactant, are suspended in some type of carrier fluid such as water or oil to form the final solution.
Because this fluid has unique magnetic properties, it is frequently used in labs and classrooms as a teaching tool. Using this substance is an easy way to demonstrate the effects of magnetism. It is also used to create a type of liquid seal, or O-ring, for the rotating drive shafts on semiconductors. Magnets hold the fluid in place to create a strong barrier that reduces friction.
Ferrofluid is commonly utilized in the production of audio speakers. For more than 30 years, it has been added to speakers to increase the their performance. It reduces distortion by applying force that centers the voice coil. Its unusual properties also help to lubricate the device, improve damping, increase heat resistance and enhance the overall quality of sound.
This fluid has become a popular way to create amazing displays of art. When a magnet is placed near the solution, its magnetic particles move and align to produce interesting magnetic patterns. This usually results in a three-dimensional, spiked figure that can be used as a conversation piece.
Ferrofluid is valuable in many areas, and due to its chemical composition and ability to display the properties of magnetism, its uses and applications are on the rise. In medicine and biotechnology, scientists are developing ways to use it to help detect cancer and diagnose Alzheimer's disease.
