Fewer Couples May Be Choosing To Divorce, But Consider Just How Many Have Separated

Before I begin, I want to acknowledge that the fact that Britains divorce rate is

at its lowest in nearly 40 years has already been widely reported and that this post is, as a result, treading old ground.

Only this morning, though, did I notice the correlation between our falling divorce rate and the fact that standards of living in the UK have diminished significantly in recent years. Several explanations for our falling divorce rate have been put forward in recent months; the growth of cohabitation, a more liberal attitude towards open marriages and the growing influence of celebrity culture to name but a few. Still, the precarious financial situations that many couples now find themselves in following the great recession is still the most plausible explanation for our declining divorce rate and declining living standards add further weight to this theory.

If many couples are putting off their divorce for financial reasons, however, then we have to ask how many of these couples have separated or, worse still, are stuck in unhappy marriages and hoping to rectify matters solely because they will be unable to survive on one income. I suspect that the number should someone undertake the necessary research would be alarmingly high.

Logic dictates that a couple that are experiencing difficulties are more likely to divorce and difficulties with finance are no different. In fact, as research has consistently shown, money trouble is one of the most stressful things that a person can experience. Literally thousands of couples have been affected by high-inflation, frozen pay packets and cuts in recent months and this will no doubt have put them under immense strain this, in turn, will no doubt have seen many people file for divorce. Those who could not afford to divorce separated. Those who could not afford to separate have stayed in loveless marriages.

In short, then, as the economy recovers, more and more unhappy couples will be filing for divorce. Some have stated that this will result in a boom, but I feel that this is an overstatement. Not all couples are likely to find themselves solvent as soon as the economy begins to grow and the divorce rate is more likely to grow slowly following economic recovery as a result.
