Fiber Art Supplies: Foils
Fiber art supplies and quilt supplies can be difficult to acquire
, but online stores such as Stitches, which is based on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, are making it easier than ever for fiber artists to get their supplies. Stitches was created back in 1998, and it has evolved over the years to become an online mecca of fiber art supplies.
If you are new to the world of fiber art, you may be unfamiliar with the art supplies available and/or what to do with them. This article provides an introduction to fiber art supplies with a spotlight on foils. It will also outline the adhesive products available for use in conjunction with foils.
Foils can be used to decorative effect on various surfaces. Foil is a high gloss mylar with a pull-away clear backing, and it is also known as "foil paper" or a"foil sheet". Foils can be applied to paper, fabrics, knits, lace, leather, vinyl, plastic, glass, ceramics, wood, and walls, amongst other surfaces. You can add a little pizzazz to your fiber art works with foils by affixing them with adhesives, glues, or any tacky material, to which they can bond. It is important to keep in mind, though, that different adhesives can create different aesthetic effects, so understanding which adhesives to use when is key to achieving your desired results.
One example of an adhesive product to use with foils is Jones Tones foil glue. The foil glue can be applied with a paint brush, stamp, stencil, or silk screen. Another option is fusible webs, such as those made by Wonder Under and Trans Web, which bond foils to surfaces with the heat of an iron. Fusible webs suit light to medium-weight materials.
Additionally, you can use Bonding Powder to adhere your foils to surfaces by sprinkling the powder onto fabric and heating it using an iron (and a Teflon pressing sheet between the powder and the iron). A Rub n Write pen can be used on firm surfaces, applying the foil while the adhesive is still wet.
Any of the products mentioned, as well as a vast selection of other fiber art supplies, can be ordered online through Stitches' website. The store also offers classes and retreats in their physical store in BC, for example the "Shimmer and Shine" workshop that instructs students on the inclusion of sparkly materials (such as foils) in art projects.
