Fiddler On The Roof Tickets - Singing Through The Ups And Downs

Though the national tour of Fiddler on the Roof remains successful in production

, the '60s play has been hit hard this year with turmoil. The show lost one of its original Tevye the Milkmans this year, when Fiddler on the Roof's Chicago thespian Lee Pelty died in late November 2009. The actor, who was a veteran of the stage and Chicago theater, performing in productions like South Pacific, My Fair Lady and Phantom of the Opera, had last "fiddled" in February 2007 at the Theater at the Center in Munster. The play's recent revival marked Pelty's reunion with director William Pullinsi, noted Broadway World, as the collaborating duo worked together on Fiddler three decades prior.

Yet the show recovered just a few days later when the Directors Guild of America gave Fiddler on the Roof director Norman Jewison a Lifetime Achievement Award. The celebration will be held for the 83- year-old Canadian director who picked up three Academy Awards in January. The film version of the 1964 play remains one of the top grossing film musicals of all time, earning five Oscar nominations and picking up three for Best Picture, Director and Best Adaptation and Original Song Score for John Williams.

The picture, filmed in London and Yugoslavia, premiered in 1971 and starred Chaim Topol and Leonard Frey. "[Jewison] is an incredible filmmaker whose calm, affable manner belies a ferocious creative fire within," DGA President Taylor Hackford said in a statement. "Norman well deserves to stand among the giants of cinema whom we have honored in the past." Itching to see not only Jewison's work but the Broadway stage manner in which it is based? Catch Fiddler on the Roof tickets online.

This Broadway musical has long been celebrated, and now (along with Jewison's award) the show lives on as Zero Mostel's original script is housed at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts as part of the exhibit Writing to Character. The showcase features 70 Tony Award-winning Broadway musicals in a historical leap through time with collections from Broadway's scores, letters, costumes designs, rehearsal notes and more. The exhibition explores the director's actions, the story that brought the musical to the stage and more in an effort to collaborate on some of the next big hits.

Fiddler on the Roof first premiered at the Broadway Theater in New York in 1964 and saw revivals in 1967, 1976, 1981, 1990, 1994, 2004 with tours in 1969 (U.S.), 1983 (West End) and 2007 (West End). This year's production is featured at the Ovation! Musical Theater Bainbridge; directed by Ron Milton with musical direction by Corinna Lapid-Munster, the 50 performers will sing nightly through December at the BHS Theater along with a live orchestra. The show is yet another demanding feature that is sure to dedicate many nights to Chicago's favorite Tevye (Lee Pelty), as well as the director who made the show mainstream (Jewison).
