Fight the Signs of Aging with a Brow Lift
As we age, father time etches our lives in our foreheads
. The forehead area is one of the most expressive features on our face, and over time, cares and worries are engraved for all to see.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more that 50,000 people elected to erase the worry lines of their furrowed brows by electing
browplasty, or brow lift surgery.
Depending on the severity of the wrinkles on the forehead, there are three types of surgery to choose from, the direct browplasty, the coronal browplasty, and the endoscopic browplasty. Each procedure addresses different needs.
Procedure Options
The direct brow method only addresses the eyebrow area, where the skin droops down over the eyes, creating a sad visage. An elliptical incision is cut in the brow line and the skin is pulled taut and sewn in place. This method does not address the deeper folds and wrinkles that occur in the forehead area as we age.
The coronal method has been performed for almost one hundred years in the same manner. An incision is made across the top of the head, hidden in the hairline. This incision typically goes from one ear to the other and the skin of the forehead is pulled up tight. The excess skin is then removed and the skin sutured closed. Obviously, this procedure is more extensive and invasive than the direct brow lift, but it will definitely defeat those deep-set furrows of the aged brow.
A newer procedure, called endoscopic forehead lift, uses smaller incisions through which the surgeon works. A small camera, the endoscope, is inserted into one of the incisions and another special tool is used to pull and manipulate the skin. This procedure is often better suited to men who experience hair loss.
Using the camera, the surgeon guides the other tool to cut and pull muscles and skin from underneath, resting the skin on temporary hangers affixed to the skull. After several weeks of healing, the skin grows and connects to the new, higher position. The body absorbs the small hangers after several months.
Outcomes
Regardless of the procedure used a browplasty can provide a more youthful and bright appearance. The endoscopic procedure produces less scarring, but is also less effective for very deep wrinkles and folds. The endoscopic procedure is also slightly less enduring, and may require a touch up after about ten years. The more traditional procedure can last much longer, and may never require any tweaking.
As with any surgical procedure, browplasty does involve certain risks including excessive bleeding, adverse reaction to anesthesia, scarring, and prolonged numbness to the face. To minimize these risks, it is important to find a qualified surgeon with plenty of experience performing all types of cosmetic procedures.
Browplasty is commonly performed with other cosmetic procedures, such as
blepharoplasty or a facelift for total facial make over. Though we are unable to halt the advancement of time, there are measures for erasing its effects on our faces, and restoring a more youthful appearance.
