Where does it fall in the World of Figurative Art

Figurative art, careful observation of human form, the beautiful, sensual lines. There are paintings and drawings, the traditional life drawing class and then there is anime. I will come right out and say it. I love anime. It is beautiful, entertaining and most always very sexy. The girls of anime may be story characters or they may be fantasy and game figures. They are skillfully illustrated by trained artists. But there are characteristics that are interesting and to some people a bit disturbing and even offensive. What am I referring to?

First of all I think we can make a distinction that many artists enjoy making. Anime is under the catagory of illustration. It is stylized, it is idealized and it is created much differently, the goal and the method of study is much different than that of the fine artist/ life drawer and life painter. All the same it is beautiful work.

About that disturbing issue and this is where a morality judgment often comes to light. First of all anime is primarily for story telling to a child and teen audience, of course there are many adults that enjoy the art of anime. Here is the issue or the question of concern.Are the girls of anime really 12 year old girls with huge breasts and little girls in adult bodies. It is difficult to deny that anime has a very strong sexual quality. I personally love anime very much but I think it does raise the question is it of the figurative arts? and is it art for children? Or is it in a seperate category of the commercial illustrator and if so is it clearly beautiful and creative? I think it is. I also think perhaps it is what it is in terms of being a sexual representation.
