Figuring Out What to Major In

For many young students (and some older returning students), there is a lot of pressure to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life, and you aren't given much time to do it: four, maybe five years at best. Ideally, however, you are given an extremely short amount of time within which to narrow down your decision. Within the first semester of college, most students have picked out what they want to major in and have already begun to take classes that are geared in the direction of their future career. But what if you are among the masses of college students who haven't been able to whittle your choices down?

It seems as if you should really know what it is you want to major in before you even get into college. For some people, this choice is an easy one since they base their decision on what to major in on whatever subject or subjects they performed well in in high school. For instance, someone who has consistently done well in math all throughout high school might consider majoring in engineering or something science related upon entering college. There are also other standards which may get in the way of realizing your collegiate dreams. A college that is highly ranked for its science program may have a more competitive admissions process, and if your test scores aren't up to snuff, you may not even make it to the gates of the campus.

Once you enter high school your freshman year, this is the time when the molding of your future takes place. It is a time of true self discovery and figuring out what things you are truly good at. Also making a significant impact on some students' decisions to enter into college, let alone decide on a subject to major in is their high school and grade school teachers. Throughout life, we always remember that one teacher who was really nice to us- who went out of his or her way to make sure that we understood the information, that we were being taught. On the other hand, there are also those teachers who will be forever ingrained upon our memories for giving us a hard time or presenting subject material in such a negative way that we can never fully get over the experience.

Whatever you decide to do, colleges are full of opportunities for success. All of the tools are right there at your finger tips, and there are plenty of people in the administration department who have experience and can help you figure out what classes will be best to take, which ones to avoid and even suggestions for what sorts of extracurricular activities might appeal to you. Take advantage of it! Use your administration to ask questions to answers you are unsure of and do your own research to figure out what will work best for you. Remember that the only person who can truly hold you back in life is yourself.
