Fill Your Life With Music Without Annoying The Neighbors
A professor of mine once challenged me to write a paper describing a society where there was no music
. The point of the assignment was to show me that whether I was aware of it or not our present day society simply does not and likely cannot exist without music of one sort or another.
It is interesting to consider the sounds that we have around us at all times and how many of them include music. Of course the music that we hear is not always the music we like.
For instance, when telephoning and put on hold usually there is music to keep you either entertained, irritated, soothed or some other emotion while you are waiting for someone to answer your call. I don't know about you but frequently I find the choice of music while on hold is anything but pleasant.
There are the waiting rooms with music, malls with music, stores with music, elevators with music, restaurants with music and on and on. Obviously there is no way that any establishment can find music that will please everybody, so they do their best and we take potluck.
My suggestions for using music in the way it should be used which is for pleasure, enjoyment, motivation, relaxation or any other category are as follow.
In the first instance I personally like the experience of live music making. I think that going to concerts, theater, opera, ballet, outdoor concerts, rock concerts etc are wonderful experiences and can indeed be uplifting. I know that once I get in the habit of going out to live music, I really get addicted.
At home having a good sound system and a collection of music which suits your various moods is certainly an advantage because you can pick and choose what you hear. Of course there are many choices in this area of portable devices so you can listen to music you like wherever you are without disturbing anyone else. You can even have earphones which exhibit the latest fashion in earphones and be the envy of everyone who sees you.
Another facet of music for me is the realization that some of my best music experiences have come after I have been in a situation of having silence for a while. Personally I feel the need to rest my ears from time to time. When I do have silence around me and then break it with my choice of music I find that I actually have a much more acute sense of hearing and consequently the pleasure of listening to the music is very much heightened.
Silence really deserves an entire paragraph devoted to it. Because of the almost universal absence of silence, it can become one of the most wonderful things to enjoy. It isn't that difficult to find. If it seems elusive, just put your best earphones on and don't connect them to anything. Your family may think you have gone a bit weird, but since you can't hear them you will never know.
Basically music exists for our pleasure, enrichment, comfort, challenge and all the other emotions that can come from it. We owe it to ourselves to learn to control the music we are being exposed to and make sure that we form a real love affair with music and never let it become anything negative.
This is not always easy to accomplish, but if you frequently think about music and control it so that it is being a positive and uplifting part of your life, then you are serving the muses well and will find life much more beautiful than it used to be.
