Nowadays there's a real threat of a tour operator, airline or hotel going bust. So how can we book our holiday yet protect our hard earned cash that's paid for it? Well, here we look into the ways we can best try and financially protect our money.

1.Credit Card Bookings

If you have a credit card then make sure you use it to book your holiday. A Mastercard, Visa card or similar will protect your cash should the company you have booked your travel through go bust. It may take a while to get your cash back but at least you will get it back. So whether you are booking a complete package holiday, or whether you are booking separate flights, hotel and transfers be sure to book using your credit card. Do be aware however, that most tour operators will charge you a minimal amount, usually around 2.5% of the total cost of your booking, to book using a credit card. However, in my mind it's a small price to pay for financial security.

Please also be aware that regular bank debit cards do not offer anything like the same amount of compensation for purchases made on these cards. Usually a bank card will offer a maximum of a 100 refund. To be totally sure and totally safe, check with your bank first before booking on your bank debit card.

2.Travel Insurance

It is vital that you take out suitable travel insurance the moment you book your travel plans. So many travellers are caught out as they do not book their travel insurance until days before they actually travel. Yet travel insurance isn't just what happens if you fall ill when you are abroad or if you lose your luggage, but also to offer financial security should something happen to your booking before you travel. Policies covering scheduled airline failure, as well as cancellation & curtailment will protect you should your carrier or operator go bust before your travel. Or if you are overseas a decent policy will assist you getting home if you are stranded. Another organisation which can safe guard your money when booking a holiday is ABTA. If you are booking through a Travel Agent be sure to check that they are registered with ABTA. A fully registered ABTA Travel Agent booking will mean your holiday is fully protected by the ABTA scheme should the worst happen. Do not assume this as sometimes operators will make additional charges for this protection.

5.Travel Trust Association

Some independent travel agents and tour operators are members of the Travel Trust Association members of this organisation offer financial assistance.

6.Association of Independent Tour Operators

Again, travel agents and tour operators who are members of this Association offer financial assistance should bookings become void following administration of travel companies.
