There are many kinds of workouts that do not involve weights or iron of any kind, besides your body of course. So, drop the gym membership and your lifting spotter and look for alternative forms of exercise that are all around you.
Many people enjoy traditional and non-traditional exercise classes such as pilates, yoga, Zumba, kickboxing, aerobics and spinning. Some of those classes are taken to an even deeper level by entering fitness swimming pools.
Classes offer a challenging, motivating environment and a chance to get to know people with similar health interests. Also, many often enjoy the fact that each class has a new routine, so they never get bored.
One of the newest fitness classes is called Zumba and is a mix of latin dance moves at aerobic rates. This option is so much fun that people do not even realize they are getting such an intense workout.
Though it has been around since the 1990s, Zumba has recently jumped in popularity and is now offered in local recreational and fitness facilities. Those instructors are currently licensed and number up to 50,000.
If you prefer to work out on your own, Zumba is just one of the options that you can perform right in your own living room. Fitness DVDs are a convenient way to burn calories without the hastle of traveling or paying too much.
There are DVDs for any desired workout result. For example, there are toning DVDs like yoga and pilates as well as cardio and muscle building DVDs.
In addition to fitness classes, many choose to get their exercise from the great outdoors. If you enjoy nature and treating your body well, this may be a good option for you.
Some popular outdoor activities involve swimming, rock climbing, hiking, jogging, walking or playing sports like frisbee or soccer. Depending on where you live, there might be seasonal sports available for you.
Sports like snowboarding, skiing, wakeboarding, surfing or golfing are other activities that people enjoy while they burn calories and improve their health simultaneously. Many of these activities become hobbies which makes it easier to get moving than tedious, mundane exercises.
As far as running is concerned, many people like to run on their own and reach their personal goals. However, some like the added challenge of a race, whether it be a 5K, 10K, half marathon or the full 26.2 miles.
Running is its own world of exercise, in which many are interested in all parts of the world. Thus, there are many people to meet and bonds to build in the ever-growing community of runners.
Aside from outdoor and workout DVDs, some peopl e enjoy doing workouts between the outdoors and in their homes with alternative equipment such as resistance bands, stability balls and medicine balls. All of which can be combined with exercises that involve the one's personal body weight as resistance like push-ups, pull-ups, squats and sit-ups.
Resistance bands, for example, can be attached to stationary objects or just stretched between your limbs. The purpose of this exercise tool is to tone and strengthen muscle mass.
Any exercise that relies on muscle contraction against an opposing force is also known as isotonic exercise. Those this may sound similar to lifting weights, however, they offer different results.
If your main goal is to gain as much muscle as possible, then lifting weights may be the fastest way to attain your desired physique. On the other hand, if you are interested in long-term health and a strong, enduring body, you might want to consider resistance workouts.
Now, onto the stability ball. Not only does the stability ball improve your muscle strength and appearance, it helps establish balance and posture while you strive to maintain a state of equilibrium on a spherical surface.
This ball is common for at-home workouts and also in fitness classes like yoga, pilates and abs classes. It can be used for any part of the body and focuses on collaboration between all of the muscles in the body to achieve a balanced state.
One of the most popular activities the stability ball is used for, is for abdominal exercises. The curved top allows for a broader motion when doing sit-ups, for example.
