People start to use drugs for a number of reasons
. One of the most common reasons (particularly among teenagers) is curiosity to try new things and friendship with people who are already using or abusing drugs. Other reason of using drugs is to enhance the athletic performance. Depression and stress is another important factor that leads people to use drugs. Some people become victims of drugs such as cocaine, heroin etc and some even become victims of prescription drug abuse. Although prescription drug addiction is common but it is not as dangerous as addition to other drugs.
Drug Abuse and Effect on Brain:
Different drugs may have different physical effects, but one thing is common among all drugs: they change the functioning of your brain. Recreational drugs increase the level of dopamine in your brain which enhances the feelings of pleasure and happiness. The brain gets addicted to these feelings and asks you take these drugs over and over again. Recurring use of drugs takes the same importance as other vital things such as eating, drinking, and sleeping. The desire to take drugs becomes so strong that the brain finds ways to deny the addiction.
Signs and Symptoms of Drug Abuse and Addiction:
Following are some of the symptoms of drug abuse and addiction. If you find these signs and symptoms in yourself or somebody you know, consider talking to someone, such as a doctor, about the drug use.
Indications of Drug Abuse:
-Neglecting responsibilities such as skipping work, flunking classes, abandoning your children and other personal and social responsibilities.
-Using drugs under risky circumstances such as driving under influence, having insecure sex, re-using needles.
-Breaking the law frequently such as getting arrested due to unacceptable behavior, driving under influence, or disorderly conduct.
Having difficulties with your relationships for example having fights with your parents, partner, friends, or family members.
Signs of Drug Addiction:
Following are some of the symptoms of drug addiction.
-Your body gets used to drugs and you need more quantity to feel the same level of pleasure
-Leaving the drugs causes nausea, insomnia, restlessness, depression, sweating, and anxiety.
-Losing control over the drug usage and feeling powerless to avoid the drugs.
-Abnormal changes in life such as sitting alone in rooms, leaving social activities like games, hobbies, etc.
Getting Help:
The most important step towards recovery is to recognize that you have a problem of drug abuse or addiction and you need help. Support from close friends, family members, counselors and some health care provider is necessary.
