Find Out How To Play Guitar And Sing Together At The Same Time

Learning the best way to accompany yourself on guitar (alternatively known as "singing

and playing guitar at the same time") is undoubtedly among the major goals for many newbie and intermediate guitarists. How awesome is it to be able to sit around with pals at a social occasion and sing all those party hits! It's also a real advantage when starting or playing in a band.

Is a Wonderful Voice Really Necessary to Play Guitar and Sing?

The quick answer is "No." Naturally, you want to be able to hold a tune. However, being able to sing like some amazing recording musician vocal superstar isn't vital by any stretch of the imagination! In actual fact, some of the biggest singer-songwriters ever, like Neil Young or Bob Dylan, do not have notably awesome voices nor are they especially amazing guitarists. However, boy do they know how to write and sing a tune! It does not make any difference at all whether you would like to just play and sing guitar at parties or you writing your own songs for the whole world, don't let an average singing voice stop you. Singing is something that speaks from the heart.

Of course, you do have to be able to sing fairly well, however that is just a matter of training. Take some singing lessons and learn all of the basics of how to sing and you may notice your voice improves dramatically. Then, resolve whether you need to take your singing more seriously or whether or not that's enough for just singing at the same time as playing guitar.

Take the Tune You've Chosen and Learn How to Play It

The typical course of action for most newbies is to attempt to play guitar and sing simultaneously before they're ready. This is really, really not a particularly good idea. What it's essential to do is learn the guitar part first. And then learn how to sing the vocal line. And then put them together.

Your first step, then, is to choose a tune you want to play with comparatively simple chord progressions and easy chord changes. It doesn't matter which song you choose. It really doesn't. There are tons of easy songs for beginners. Simply one thing you'll be able to learn to play the chords to reasonably easily, and which you genuinely like. Oh, and which does not have monstrously-difficult vocal part. Whatever you choose needs to be do-able. You don't want to spend all this time and then not even be able to sing the vocals.

As soon as you have selected your track to give your attention to (and it is best to only deal with ONE at a time!), spend as much time as you need and practise till you can play the guitar part in your sleep. Do not simply focus on your fretting hand, either. Take note of your right hand: the rhythm parts and your strumming technique. Practise, practise, practise but no singing until you have learned how to play the guitar part and built up a type of "muscle memory," meaning you can play the piece without looking at every chord change or slowing down.

Take the Track You've Selected and Learn How to Sing It

Then progress to learning how to sing it. Your first step here is to memorise the lyrics. Do NOT attempt to play guitar and sing at the same time just yet! Merely learn the lyrics and note how the singer hits particular notes, holds different notes (and the length), and gets across the feelings of the song.

When you have nailed "the feel" of the track and you have memorised the lyrics, you'll have to record yourself singing along to the music. Yes, the idea of that probably sends shivers down your spine, but the truth is it's good to understand how your voice sounds and where you require some extra focus and assistance if you're ever planning to play guitar and sing in front of people.

Now to Put Both Parts Together!

Okay, now you're ready to tackle combining the two halves, playing and singing. Take note of the weird thing that will occur: You'll start making mistakes in the chord progressions, you'll forget the lyrics, you might get tripped up on simple sections of the song... All the things that you had perfectly in your control before, they're going to now be a pain in the butt again. Weird. It'll seem hard at first (and, it's not a straightforward thing to do), as if your mouth and hands just refuse to work together!

Relax. It is just a small adjustment and by slowing down and practising in a very deliberate and careful manner, you will start to grasp it pretty quickly. The risk right here is that you might become bored and frustrated. Do NOT give up now and start learning a different song. Stick with the plan and before you realise you'll find that you can play guitar and sing at the same time!
