Find Out Who Is Linking to Your Website and Why You Should Care

You may hear a lot of talk about 'link building' or link popularity, or about getting links from other sites.

That's because links from other high quality sites have a big impact in helping your site show up higher in search results:

If you have more links on the search topic than your competitors do, Your page will more likely show up above your competitors in search engine results

There is no bigger benefit to your power to outrank your competitors than one-way links from other high-ranking, trusted sites using your primary key words to link to you

A link from another well-visited site will bring a portion of the web traffic to your site.

You may not know who is linking to your site. But you can find out with a few tools:

Google Search

To see a partial list of links almost instantly: do the following search in Google

link:yourdomain.com

Replace 'yourdomain.com' with the domain you want to find links to.

Google reveals only a partial list with this technique. But it does enable you to check quickly for the presence of any links if you're curious.

Google Webmaster Tools

Requires a Google Webmaster Account

For a bit more of a complete list, submit your site to Google using Google Webmaster Tools. The steps involve verifying your site with Google, which you can follow with a simple step-by-step process. You will need to be able to copy a file onto your web server, or have the tools and skill to change your website header to use Google Webmaster Tools.

But once you have an account, and the Googlebot has crawled your pages, you have 'insider access' to a larger portion of Google's data about your site.

Log into your Google Webmaster Tools account, and look at "your site on the web" in the left side menu. One option is: "links to your site" You will see a list of sites linking to your site.

It's a more complete list than you'll see from a Google 'link:' search. But it's still not necessarily complete.

Yahoo Site Explorer

The most complete list from a free tool (that I know of ) comes from Yahoo's Site Explorer. You do need to be logged into a (free) Yahoo account. Visit https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/. Or, search for "siteexplorer" with Google or Yahoo and put the URL you want to check into the simple input box. Click "explore URL"

The results include a list of your pages and the external site providing the source of the link.

To see only the links coming in from other sites (and not your navigation between your own pages), you have to change the default display settings.

Change the "showInlinks" settings to "Except from this domain" and "entire site".

Wordtracker Link Builder

Though not a free service (after your free trial expires) the WordTracker link builder tool is for the hardcore link explorer. Not only does it generate the most complete list of inbound links I can get to date. It also sorts the inbound links from most to least valuable to you in terms of benefit in helping you rank better. And you can see what link text the external link sources used to link to your site.

You can also see in turn how many other sites link to the people who link to you!

It can take a bit of a learning curve to use this tool. But if you're bound and determined to comb the web, looking for the relationships between sites that lies beneath the surface, this tool will turn over the rocks for you.

No matter what your level of interest in finding who's linking to you, there's a tool to give you an answer.

To sum up, here is a chart showing how these 5 tools compare in showing you who links to your website. Or any website you wish to check, including your competitor's.
