Finding A Good Kidney Transplant Center

Are you at a loss for how to find a kidney transplant center best for you

?

I have met hundreds of kidney patients who want to get a kidney transplant but don't know where to go. Some want to go to the best but don't know which is the best. Others don't even know they have a choice for a transplant center: They assume that the center their doctor recommended or a center they have heard about is their only option. You do have several options for a kidney transplant center and you can find the ones best for you.

Your kidney transplant center options: What to look for

Patients do have choice. 60% of kidney transplant centers are in major metropolitan areas with a large population of more than a million. In fact, if you live in a major metropolitan area you are most likely within driving distance of at least five transplant centers. In addition, Medicare and private PPO insurance plans do pay for a kidney transplant at most of these centers which are Medicare-approved. The only case where you would not have a kidney transplant center choice is if you have HMO insurance.

How do you then decide among these kidney transplant center choices to find the one best for you? First, start with the facts: how successful they have been with their kidney transplants over the years and how experienced they are. Look at experience always hand-in-hand with their success. This is because not every large kidney transplant center has had good outcomes. It's possible that the center got too large to pay enough attention to each patient and in that case, their success rates will be lower. The higher the success rates at a transplant center that does enough transplants every year, the more likely you will do well there.

Second, consider the centers' wait time. Because there are not enough kidneys for every patient who needs one each center has a wait list. Centers with a shorter wait list are more likely to get you a kidney faster.

Third, take the center orientation. Ask them questions about their referral and evaluation process and find out what types of patients they accept for a kidney. Centers have different selection criteria when it comes to patients' age and health condition.

Finally, summarize all you have learned and discuss your center options with your nephrologist. Your nephrologist will be able to help you better understand what all this information means for you and help you make your center choice.
