Finding Adventure In The Garden Island Of Kauai
Perhaps you have heard the myth that Kauai is a beautiful island which is perfect
for tourists who want to just lay around and don't mind having nothing to do-this is totally false. Kauai is the perfect island for tourists who want to have plenty to do!
Anyone who says this island is boring must have been asleep the whole time-there is tons to do, see, and experience. This island is one of the most visually stunning, and boasts a coastline that has been used in countless movies, due to its unique breathtaking quality.
Kauai, the fourth largest and oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands, is above all a showcase for its stunning natural environment. There are no high-rises, no four-lane highways, no sprawling urban centers, no enormous shopping malls, no bright lights-nothing to get in the way of the lush, untamed landscape that spills unrestrained across the countryside.
If you are looking for an island with a big city life, this is not the island for you. However, if you are looking for tons of outdoor adventure activities, read on.
The island's sixty three thousand full-time residents live in eighteen small communities that are divided by greenbelts that extend for miles along the coastal highway that nearly circles the island. Its rugged interior and the spectacular cliffs of the Napali Coast remain wild and uninhabited.
Kauai's mountaintop bogs and rain forests, deep canyons, tangled valleys, coral reefs, and golden-sand beaches have been in the making since the island emerged five million years ago from a volcanic "hot spot" in the depths of the ocean. Now it is ever so slowly eroding, working its inexorable way back to the sea.
Most people have heard that Kauai is not only the greenest island but that it rains a lot here. Well, that depends on where you are, and what time of year it is.
The average annual rainfall at Mt. Wai'ale'ale is four hundred and sixty inches-one of the wettest places on earth. The average rainfall on island beaches is less than forty inches a year.
Rain is heavier in the winter, but most of the time it occurs in brief showers between bouts of sunshine, and umbrellas are mostly a nuisance. The notion that Kauai is a beautiful place where there's nothing to do is dead wrong.
There are dozens of intriguing, outdoor adventures, a wealth of historic sites, thoroughly entertaining luaus, and enough nightspots and good restaurants to keep you entertained. A unique tour visits locations of movies that have been filmed on the island, many of them smash box office hits.
Uncrowded beaches frosted with golden sand occupy about half of the one hundred and eleven mile coastline. It is a great place for river and ocean kayaking, diving, snorkeling, and air tours: book a ride on a helicopter, go skydiving, learn to fly an ultra light or take a semi-private fixed wing tour.
This is a place where the link between man and nature is highly developed and largely taken for granted. And just as nature is left to its own devices, so, within reason, are the diverse cultures that populate the island.
Like the vast garden that grows unchecked over most of this island, Kauaians tend to cultivate lives that are unaffected, free from unnecessary protocol and constraints, and generally in harmony with nature and those around them. They are a friendly, social people, who will make you feel welcome and wanted.
One thing you absolutely do not want to miss is kayaking up the wailua river. It is a very wide river, which cuts through the island.
It is simply breathtaking, and usually has no current. It is a very easy paddle, and you will see deep, lush greenery and beauty you will never forget-it is truly a magical area.
If you can, rent your own kayaks instead of going with a guided group. Groups move very slowly, and don't go to all of the amazing, hidden areas.
Get a guide to give you a map and outline what you should see, and take your own kayak and explore-it would be difficult to get lost here. There are spectacular hidden waterfalls and pools, swinging ropes, cliffs to jump of off, and authentic local villages to see and explore-you will never forget this magnificent journey.
As you can see, this island offers an unlimited supply of local love and fun things to do. Book for vacation today-you will not regret it!
