Finding An Ideal Avocado In The Market

Regardless of how tasty avocados are, something occurs in the process that makes it less than great

. It may have been perfect while it was on the tree, but it can get bruised along the way along with other factors that can directly or indirectly change its taste.

When compared with other fruits and vegetables, finding the right avocado in the green grocers could be a bit difficult. One example is that it is hard to tell if it is ripe or when it is not. The skin of some avocado types may change color when ripe, yet others remains green even if it becomes too ripe to be consumed. To prevent yourself from making such a mistake when going avocado-shopping, below are a few guidelines you can follow which will help lead you to the best avocado.

If you will not use it until after a number of days, choose an avocado that stays firm once you cup it in your hand. Avocados do not ripen before it has been harvested from the tree, so in case you find one which is too soft, this means it's been on display for too long. You can place the avocado in a paper bag for a day or two if you need to hasten the ripening process.

Ripe avocados, though still firm, are slightly soft when held. Do take note though, that the word here is held, not press. Unless you are certain you will purchase it, leaving a dent on the avocado to check if it is ripe enough could leave the fruit damaged, particularly if plenty of people are going to do exactly the same thing.

The skin of over ripe avocados seem like it has already separated from the meat and definitely will taste rancid. The key is picking a soft but not mushy avocado. A white-colored powder growing close to the stem may be an indication that the fruit is over ripe.

The shape of the avocado isn't going to change its quality, irrespective of how crooked it might appear to be. So does its size. It might look big and beautiful, but it doesn't automatically mean that it's better.

Brown scaly markings on the skin may not indicate decaying flesh, but dark blemishes, sunken spots and cracks are positive signs of decaying. Select ones with a deep and even glossy color. If you see that the stem is starting to slightly pull off from the skin of the avocado, then it indicates it's just about ripe.

Another helpful tip in figuring out how ripe an avocado is to pick out its stem. Take note of the color of the small circle under it. When it is brown, this means the avocado is too ripe. If it's yellow-green, it indicates it's not yet ready to be used and if the color is bright green, regardless of the brown flecks on it, it means that it's the perfect avocado for you.
