Finding Hotels Near Lax

As the plane taxis into the terminal, it's time to say

, "Welcome to Southern California, partner!" No, you didn't step off the plane in Orange County -- you're in Los Angeles County. Actually, you're at LAX. Yes, it's a big place -- and yes, it's probably a good idea to stay someplace nearby. Not that the city isn't a welcoming one, it's just that all the stories you've heard about LA traffic are very, very true. There are any number of hotels near LAX where you can book a nice, clean room without spending an arm and a leg -- you'll need those to get around.

Let's get the ball rolling by getting off-premises and getting to nearby Manhattan Beach. The Beach is a stone's throw from the airport and it's one of the lovelier beach communities in LA. While you can score a room at any Motel 6 or Comfort Inn, if you're keen on having a true LA-esque experience, you might want to look into the Belamar. It's one of those geometrically cool hotels you'd expect to see celebrities at.

The beach itself is one of those places that makes you think about what LA used to be. I defy you to not think about Jack Tripper and is hairy friend, Larry, while strolling the beach. Yes, the opening sequence of Three's Company was filmed a few miles north in Venice, but it's still the same sun-kissed, hazy Southern Californian vibe that manages to make Coke commercials filmed here seem like glimpses into another reality.

Fact: any hotel that places you in walking distance to the beach is well worth its inflated room rate. What's better than checking in, showering, and then strolling the beaches en route to a nice little cafe? Have a nice meal, drink in the sunset, the scene, and then enjoy your cool, SoCal evening. It's the stuff dreams are made of -- and for good reason. Is it any wonder why LA has become the half-dream world it is?

Drifting in and out of reality seems to be a way of life in LA. Yes, while you can book any old room in any old hotel or motel near LAX, you have to ask yourself, "What am I looking for here?" Chances are you're looking for something that no longer exists, but something that has been transformed into an idea, a waking dream, a half-forgotten black and white movie obscured by palm fronds, smog, and a dizzy sun.
