Finding Joy With An Esrog

Several months ago I had no idea what an esrog was

. I know I had seen it before walking around various neighborhoods in the city. It is a yellow or green citrus fruit that can best be described as an orange that has been stretched out and can grow to about six inches in length. And like with other fruits there are a variety of these fascinating fruits out there including Diamante citron, Greek Citron, and Florentine citron.

The esrog is an important part of the Jewish religious community. According to Judaism, this citron fruit is referred to in the Bible as the "fruit of the beautiful tree" in Leviticus 23:40. It is used in the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, which lasts for a week. You are supposed to keep it protected for an entire week and this is done by following the custom of wrapping it in flax fibers and kept in a box that is usually made of silver. After the week is up you can take it out of the box and wrapping and do with it as you will. Instead of throwing it away you can eat parts of it or use it as an ingredient in foods. It has been sad that eating an esrog is a remedy that will allow a woman to have an easier childbirth than normal.

The esrog can be used to make jam, homemade candies, and even liqueur. Research even more online and you will b able to find a recipe for esrog vodka. I know there are a lot of people who would love to try that out, myself included. All of these ingredients are easy to gather together and the recipes are easy to try out. And since you already have an esrog or two lying around after Sukkot, you already have the most important ingredient. So make sure to keep in mind that there is a lot of different things you can make with an esrog before you just toss it out once you are done with it.

When researching about this strange but wonderful fruit I learned a lot about what you can actually do with it after the week-long celebration of Sukkot is done. You can make some pretty awesome deserts with an esrog that your whole family would love to try out. Your children will love the sweets while the adults can do a little imbibing with the esrog vodka.
