Finding Reliable San Francisco Movers
San Francisco has more hills and steep inclines per square mile than any other place in the U
. S. Ask any moving company! This is why
San Francisco movers usually charge more per hour than movers located in other urban areas.
Apartment dwellers and homeowners who have ever moved into or out of a San Francisco home will be happy to tell you how difficult it is. Carry a sofa up a hill, even a few feet, can wrench backs and bruise egos. And packing the truck can be worse. Trucks that are forced to park on these steep inclines need special equipment to keep boxes and furniture stabilized.
Off street parking is almost impossible to come by. Some apartment buildings have minimal parking lots but they don't want large moving trucks parking in them for hours on end. Tenants who pay extra for these parking spaces certainly don't want to give up spaces for moving trucks. No matter what, moving trucks normally are relegated to find parking on the street.
Many moving companies carry a good amount of liability insurance which will reimburse customers for loss or damage to items. However, if the move entails traveling over certain areas that include inclines of perhaps 45' or more, these contracts can contain disclaimers stating something similar to the fact that you need to expect some damage because it's almost impossible to prevent things from falling or tipping over, even when they are rigged to a wall securely.
For those who happen to live in buildings without elevators, or in homes with multiple floors - as is common in the Frisco area - expect some hefty surcharges to be added to your estimate. In these situations especially, it's highly likely that you'll be offered a choice of two men or four men. Always consider hiring the four men; while two are carrying things to the truck, the other two can continue working inside. Otherwise, you're paying for a lot of time while you wait for the other two to return.
Larger buildings without elevators are a particular challenge; don't be alarmed when you get quotes for what frequently is twice their regular hourly rate. Also, ask for four men instead of two. The work gets done faster. With two men, you are constantly waiting for them to bring something out, pack it, and come back again. Half the time you are paying for is wasted just waiting for them. Check your final invoice before paying it, too. Remember - you're paying by the hour and you should not have to be paying for the time they had lunch, took breaks, went for coffee, etc.
