Finding Relief From Your Bunion Pain
Are you experiencing pain around your big toe when you are wearing shoes
? Have you noticed an enlargement forming around the outside of your big toe? If so, you have probably developed a bunion on the outside of your big toe. Bunions are one of the most common foot conditions with some estimating that as much as 33 percent of the Western population has been affected. Depending on how severe your bunion is, there are a variety of potential treatments that can be prescribed for you. If you are suffering from a bunion, you should consult with your Silver Springs podiatrist to see which is the best treatment method for you.
What Are Bunions And What Causes Them?
A bunion is a bone deformity that is caused by the enlargement of the joint at the base and side of your big toe. A bunion is formed when your big toe moves out of place and starts to point towards your second toe. This causes a bump to form on the outside edge of your toe. If this is left untreated, it will continue to grow and will cause more irritation as it rubs against the inside of your shoe. Many times a bunion will lead to other foot problems such as hammertoe or arthritis.
The main cause of bunions is wearing shoes that do not fit properly. Wearing shoes that are too tight puts stress on your toe and can lead to the development of bunions over time. Bunions are not a hereditary problem, but can be common in families due to a faulty foot structure that can run in a family.
Treatment For Bunions
There are a few different treatment options to get rid of your bunion pain. Whatever the case, the first thing you need to do is stop wearing the shoes that have caused your bunions in the first place. The longer you continue to wear the shoes, the worse your bunions will become. If you stop wearing the shoes at an early stage, you may not need to undergo any further treatment. If you bunions have progressed to a more severe stage, there are a few measures that you can take to relieve your pain. Many patients wear protective padding in their shoes to eliminate the friction that can cause pain and worsen your bunion. At night, you can also wear a spacer between your big toe and second toe to help correctly align your toes.
If these solutions do not work, your podiatrist may need to perform surgery. There are more than 100 different surgical operations for bunions. All have the same goal of removing the bunion and aligning your toe correctly. Most surgeries are successful in alleviating pain, but do require a recovery period in which you are not able to use your foot very much.
