Finding The Healing Powers Of Music
Most of us would be able to name an occasion when we were deeply moved by how music helped us at some point in our lives
. After all, music forms such an integral part of our rituals and ceremonies - weddings, funerals, christenings, even sporting events. It's the moment when we can all share in the experience, irrespective of our differences.
For all this though, do you ever think of how music could have healed you? Now experts are citing the healing powers of music, and continuing to do further research in the field. In the 21st century we feel ourselves more knowledgeable and sophisticated, but the reality is that we are only rediscovering something as old as time. Shamans have long used music and chant to heal and help, the ancient schools of Greece, Rome, Egypt and India all believed in the central power music has in the universe. Even Pythagoras, the great master mathematician, taught that music held great healing powers.
Music helps more than just an emotional 'pick me up'. Imagine this.... You've had the day from hell at work, but now you're home. All is quiet in the house, and you can collapse on the couch and put on your favourite music CD. Slowly you begin to realise how it helps you relax and feel more like your old self. How can music help you and have such a soothing impact upon you? Recent studies show that music does much more than just help us relax or 'pep us up'. It can actually alter the body's physiology. Medical research is now demonstrating a direct link between music and our immune systems, in the relief of helping pain, and even in enhancing our mental functions and concentration.
One of the most extraordinary examples of this occurred in the 60's in a humble Benedictine monastery in France. French replaced Latin as the language of worship, and chanting was abandoned in favour of other activities. Before long a profound change occurred in the community. Monks who had previously survived on three or four hours of sleep a night became tired, and gradually very prone to illness. They were permitted to sleep longer, but this didn't help. Their diet was changed to include meat... still no improvement. In fact, their overall health deteriorated steadily, along with their hearing. Eventually the Abbot called in Dr Alfred Tomatis, a physician and ear specialist. His advice re-introduced chanting into the life of the monastery. Within nine months, most of the monks had made a remarkable improvement, and most were back to a routine of lots or work and little sleep!
Don't fear, you don't need to learn Gregorian chant to get the benefits! Think of the ways that best suit you; huming on the way to work, whistling your favourite tune. Maybe get yourself an Ipod or MP3 and make your music more portable. More and more you will begin to realise that music gets your day off to a good start. Tune into the music and tune out of the stress, and watch your health improve.
