Microsoft .NET Developers who are seeking to change jobs should consider carefully the recruitment agencies they tend to use

. As an experienced recruiter working within the .NET area in the UK, to often I come across both permanent and contract developers who have had nightmare experiences. CV's have been sent to previous employers (without permission being sought), multiple copies of the same CV submitted to the same company, a lack of qualification and even word getting back to existing employers that the candidate is looking for another job. Let's be clear any of these types of activities are to be avoided.

My recommendation is that candidates aim to work with just a small number of agencies 2-3 would be my advice. I feel that you might limit yourself by working with just a single agency; it's important that you have a good look around. Previous agents who have done well for you in the past are obviously worth getting in touch with. Perhaps a variety of types of agencies should be approached as well. Perhaps a large agency with a big presence, a smaller regional agency and one that is dedicated to the type of work that you do.

Bigger agencies are eas to recognise. A search for the type of role you are looking for can be most helpful in identifying these. You likely know the names of some of the bigger agencies anyway. Always check with them how they intend to market you to their clients - will they speak with you before proposing you to a client (this is important), will they give advice on your CV, are they interested in you in a person? These are all important questions to ask of the bigger agency.

Regional recruitment agencies may offer a pot-luck approach. It might just be they have what you are looking for. On the other hand perhaps not. They will have relationships with lots of local companies and will be able to pick up the phone to the internal HR organisation and enquire if any Microsoft .NET roles exist.

Perhaps most importantly of all, is to focus on a specialist agency that knows the Microsoft .NET market. Agencies that know your discipline and understand where you fit in terms of skills, experience, type of firm and much more. Specialist agencies live on the reality that company HR departments really like to use them. Why? Because they know their market and they understand the job description. Usually they get just a handful of CV's, all of which pretty much nail what the employer is looking for. Hiring managers do not like their time wasted so specialist agencies usually deliver the goods in a reliable way. They stick to their knitting.

The other advantage to working with a smaller, specialist agency is that they can give you good advice. Their intimate knowledge of the marketplace means that they can quickly advise on your market value, the skills you should be looking to develop, trends in what employers seek. They can get you to the best employers, no the people who will interview you and will be able to give you pertinent advice as to how to perform with a particular employer.

By sticking with an approach as described above, you will likely get the best of all worlds.The sheer presence of a big agency, the localisation of a small generalist agency and the knowledge and understanding of you as a person and of employers that is offered by a specialist agency.
