Always be pragmatic in planning your gap year. It's very easy to get whisked away with the romance of it all, but thinking clearly and planning properly is vital. As your parents will no doubt have told you, safety comes first - and finding yourself stuck in a country with no money and not a word of the local language is not the most secure place to be!
