Finish Your Vegetables!
Is a saying that we have all grown accustom to as children, and even though we knew that our mothers were only doing what they thought best, we still gave our angry scowls at her inevitable insistence. Now being a bit older we might be saying the same thing to our child, because we know of the benefit that eating green vegetables can have on a developing human body. Well vegetables like broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower are even more beneficial than we probably thought possible. That is because all of these green foods contain significant amounts of DIM which can significantly boost the immune system and lower your chances of testing positive for cancer.
Scientists had known for some time that having a healthy diet consisting of these veggies was one way for patients to help reduce the risk of cancer. However, they never knew the full extent to which chemicals like DIM would play in helping to bolster one's immune system. It was not until Dr. Leonard Bjeldanes laboratory team at the University of Berkley, who were researching the biological properties of Diindolymethane at the time, discovered DIM could help to activate a person's immune response system.
Essentially what they found out was that DIM, when it is first taken into the body, gets broken down and absorbed as Diindolymethane. Diindolymethane then serves as a sort of /immune_system.htm">natural immune booster by helping your body to produce interferon-gamma; a protein vital to monitoring the body's immune system. This protein helps to maintain, grow, and signal the body's natural defenses, like B-Cells, T-Cells, and Natural Killer (NK) Cells, when under attack from unwanted virus and bacteria. Therefore taking health amounts of DIM can really help keep your immune system on the alert and more prepared when fighting off infections.
So while we are still a ways off from completely curing fully developed cancer, we can at least be proud of our discovery for a cancer prevention diet. We knew when we were younger to eat our green vegetables even if we hated them, but now maintaining a healthy diet of these same brassica vegetables really could save our lives. So stay healthy and live strong.
