Firefighting careers cover run a broad spectrum in today's world

These different disciplines all have specific work programs that go into them and though not all of them require the harsh, training of a standard Fire Fighter, all of them present mental and physical challenges to the person seeking a career in this field.

EMT training, for one, requires knowledge of all life saving equipment and techniques, up to and including, proper insertion of IV's, knowledge of how to measure and read heart rates and respiration, proper use of drugs and oxygen. Knowledge of all of these methods and equipment is very important to saving the lives of those injured in accidents or fires.

The Fire Fighter Needs to be in peak shape mentally and physically to face the rigors of their jobs such as carrying the infirm or injured and accepting that sometimes no matter how hard they try, people die.

The Engine Driver needs razor honed reflexes day or night, exhausted or wide awake to control the truck at high speeds as it flies towards fires. This member of the Fire Unit needs absolute control over the vehicle at all times in the name of safety for all vehicles on the road as some drivers of other vehicles do not pay attention to the sound of the siren and so the Engine Driver often takes responsibility for all on the road with them

The Fire Chief has, by all accounts, the hardest job in the entire unit as the Chief makes the decisions of when to send people in and when to pull his people out of the buildings. The Fire Chief has worked his way up through the ranks starting at Fire Fighter 1 and progressed up the ladder. The Fire Chief sees the triumph and tragedy of being fire fighter and still suits up at every bell.

Monetary wages and salaries of firefighters, as well as benefits vary but all begin with a salary of around $36,000.00 a year with benefits. If a person considers what a fire fighters face every alarm, this package is fair and just comparison.
