It is the goal of most homeowners, whether they are staying in their properties or doing them up to be sold on, to make their living spaces as attractive as possible.

According to a report in the Calgary Herald, installing fireplaces can be a great way to get the most from houses.

It stated: "Nothing adds ambience to a room like the glow from a fireplace."

The publication went on to point out that there are a range of such products to choose from. For example, consumers can opt for marble fireplaces or those made from stone and other materials.

Meanwhile, industry practitioner Dave Cripps claimed the current trend in such heat and light emitting items is contemporary.

According to the expert, people are going for sleek lines with clean faceplates that do not show much apart from glass and fire.

He remarked: "The idea is to get just a window so you only have the glass viewing area showing."

Mr Cripps went on to note that while gas fires now make up the majority of sales, there is still a market for those that burn wood, potentially including marble fireplaces.

He stated: "The wood fire is still nicer as far as ambience [is concerned]. No matter how good we get, we're not as good as being able to recreate a wood fire and there are a lot of people who still like that wood-burning effect."

However, such items are "only as good as the person who's actually loading" them, he went on to point out.

When people forget to feed them, they go out. In contrast, gas fires stay on regardless.

Consumers across the UK may be tempted to revamp or fit new fireplaces in their homes over the next few months before the onset of the coldest months.
