First Aid - Alsco Managed Training Services - Child Safety Preventing Injuries
Its important to know how to treat first aid injuries wherever and whenever they occur
, but best-in-class managed first aid providers like Alsco Training (alscotraining.com.au) increasingly are focused on preventing injuries as well as treating them.
One of the most obvious risk areas is the family home, with young children particularly vulnerable to potential dangers around them.
Emergency medical treatment for young children or babies isnt always the same as for adults. All parents today are encouraged to ensure they have current training in paediatric (child) first aid, including a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) course.
Alsco Training, which focuses on workplace first aid training, says that from hot water heater thermostats to locked drawers containing knives and scissors, the family home needs constant vigilance to ensure children are kept safe from harm.
And while Alsco Training specializes in managed workplace first aid services, it also supports checklists and programs that help parents and guardians to best care for children.
Alsco Training also points out the added risks to children when family pets such as inquisitive dogs and cats are given free rein in the home. Pets are inquisitive and playful and easily can dislodge vases and ornaments, causing breakages and possible cuts to toddlers unprotected hands, legs and feet.
One piece of useful advice for parents with young children is to try to see things from a toddlers perspective, at ground level. If a parent wants to see what Alsco first aid experts already know, he or she will crawl around the floor on hands and knees and see what catches their eye.
Unintentional injury is a leading cause of death in children 14 years old and younger and many of them occur at home, with the vast majority of fatalities affecting under four-year-olds.
A child home safety checklist for parents could include:
- Is the thermostat on the hot water heater set below 120 F (49 C)?
- Are bathroom hot water taps furthest away from the bath edge? (Because baths usually are lower than sinks, it is sensible to make sure an inquisitive young child can reach the cold tap more easily than the hot water tap.)
- Are sharp tools including razor blades, nail scissors, knives and so on stored in locked cabinets?
- In the kitchen, are knife drawers too high for a toddler to reach?
- Are there childproof latches on all drawers and cabinets?
- Do all power outlets have circuit interrupters which cut out if an electrical appliance gets wet?
- Is there a toilet-lid lock on the toilet basin?
- Are there nonskid strips on the bottoms of bathtubs and non-slip pads under rugs?
- Are medicines and cleaners stored in locked cabinets and are there child-proof caps on all medications?
- Could a toddler get to your swimming pool despite the safety fence?
- Are all gardening supplies and car maintenance products stored safely away from children?
- Are recycling containers for glass and metal stored out of reach? Are garbage cans covered?
- Because children have been known to choke on strings and ribbons as well as the adjustment cords on blinds, parents should ensure there are no loops where a toddlers head could be caught. Window blind and curtain cords should be tied off with clothespins or cord clips.
- Are heavy pieces of furniture secured to walls? (A common cause of toddler death is a television or heavy piece of furniture falling over and landing on the youngster.)
- Is the laundry kept locked to stop a toddler playing in the washing machine or spin dryer?
- Do toy chests or toy storage containers have non-locking lids?
- Are all windows fitted with window guards?
- Is the childs sleepwear flame-retardant?
While this checklist is not exhaustive, Alsco Training says it can help parents avoid many of the common causes of injury to young children.
Other obvious risks occur in kitchens where saucepan handles stick out over the side of the hot plate, or where pets can climb to investigatesmells or interesting items.
