First Aid - Alsco Managed Training Services - Choking
Choking can hit anyone, any time, sometimes with fatal results and immediate first aid assistance can make the difference between life and death.
At Alsco managed first aid training, we teach First Aiders to deal with blockages in the throat possibly a food item that has gone down the wrong way - or other causes including allergic reactions and injuries that make the throat area swell, restricting air flow to the lungs.
Alsco Training (www.alscotraining.com.au) teaches that choking is either partial or complete, with partial choking allowing an inadequate air flow to the lungs. The more-serious, prolonged or complete choking can result in asphyxia and anoxia and is potentially fatal because oxygen stored in the blood and lungs can only keep the victim alive for several minutes after breathing stops completely.
Alsco Training therefore ensures its First Aiders are fully trained to know exactly how to proceed when faced with a choking patient.
Alsco-trained First Aiders recognise that choking can be caused by:- Physical obstruction of the airways.- Respiratory diseases that cause airway obstruction.- Compression of the larynx or vertebrate trachea (similar to what would happen during strangulation). The most commonly-recognised choking problems come from food (or in children, toys or household objects) in the airways. In adults, choking usually occurs while the patient is eating, with small items like peanuts a major cause. One serious side effect with choking is that victims may have great trouble speaking or crying out and so may be unable to call for help. If they are alone at the time of the attack, they may be able only to seek help by finding workmates to raise the alarm. It therefore is important that all employees not just Alscos First Aiders know not to treat possible choking victims as just joking. At Alsco Training, choking is treated using a number of different procedures, with basic techniques taught to all First Aiders and more advanced techniques available for health professionals.Abdominal thrusts, also known as the Heimlich Manoeuvre*, are perhaps the best-known technique, but modern protocols now involve several treatment stages that are designed to apply increasing levels of pressure from minimal intervention to extreme. These are:- Encouraging the victim to cough (to ensure the First Aider is dealing with an item that cannot be dislodged easily). Studies have found many people are too quick to undertake potentially dangerous interventions, such as abdominal thrusts, for items which could have been dislodged without intervention. - If the choking is caused by an irritating substance and not an obstruction, a conscious patient should be allowed to drink water. (As the airway is already closed, there is very little danger of water entering the lungs.)- Between five and 20 hard blows with the heel of the hand on the victims upper back are recommended.(*In Australia, abdominal thrusts [the Heimlich Manoeuvre] now are not generally recommended for inclusion in First Aider training because they can injure the victim.)If your company is interested in a managed first aid training solution, call Alsco Training on 1300 651 706 for further information or to book an on-site survey with one of our consultants. On the web: http://www.alscotraining.com.auby: Alsco
