First Aid for Summer Camps

So, you've decided to be a camp counselor or at least a volunteer to a summer program

. While part of your training may include learning first aid, knowing what to do when faced with basic emergencies isn't always a given. In fact, many adults and teens, when faced with a first aid kit, aren't always sure how to use everything inside. A recent article gives some tips for summer camp first aid skills and addresses the most common injuries for children outdoors. Here are some of their tips and suggestions in a condensed version:

For bee stings, make sure you ice the area immediately. This can be done with a cold or homemade ice pack. Once the swelling has gone down slightly, try to extract the sting with tweezers. Some children and adults are allergic to bee stings, however, and, in these cases, Benadryl should be administered and then 911 should be dialed.

A twisted ankle may occur from a fall or during a sports game. If the sprain is bad enough that the child or adult can't stand on it, make sure to rest the area, ice it, use compression, and elevate it. The first aid supplies needed in this case should include a cold or ice pack and an ace bandage. When applying the bandage, make sure that the person doesn't feel a pins and needles sensation and that the area doesn't turn red.

Most sunburns are considered first degree burns and should be treated as such. This means putting a cold compress or wash cloth on the area or possibly using an analgesic.

Splinters are also common injuries in the summer. While most will come out with tweezers, a splinter that won't requires medical attention.

Injuries requiring immediate medical attention include: swollen extremities, abdominal injuries, cuts or lacerations needing stitches, and injuries from a rusted nail or other piece of metal.
