Establish evacuation and communication plans. This may include contacting a relative and using him or her as a communications point and finding the quickest route to emergency shelters.

Be aware of hurricane warnings. These are often broadcast on the radio and television in advance. Once you're aware of these storm warnings, begin your evacuation plan.

Make sure you have all supplies well in advance of a storm.
