First Aid in Hurricane Preparedness

As you're probably aware, hurricane season started this past month

, and areas around the South are preparing for these storms in varying degrees. Certain articles, such as this one, discuss various strategies for preparing for a hurricane. Generally, part of this article involves creating a purchasing a disaster preparedness kit for emergencies and creating escape and communication plans. Because 2010 is projected to be a more active season than in the past (and the recent Gulf oil spill also complicates matters), now is the time to make yourself prepared for a storm. Some tips from the linked article above include:

Creating an emergency or disaster preparedness kit. This should contain enough water for three days, non-perishable food, canned fruits, a can opener, a battery-powered radio, flashlights, several batteries, a full first aid kit, and backup prescription and non-prescription medicines to last a 30-day period.

Copy all important documents, such as birth certificates, social security cards, and homeowner papers, and seal them in water and air tight containers. The original documents should be kept in a location that won't be affected if a storm hits.

Establish evacuation and communication plans. This may include contacting a relative and using him or her as a communications point and finding the quickest route to emergency shelters.

Be aware of hurricane warnings. These are often broadcast on the radio and television in advance. Once you're aware of these storm warnings, begin your evacuation plan.

Make sure you have all supplies well in advance of a storm. A full disaster preparedness kit can be purchased through 1st Aid Supplies, for example, or else you can create your own kit if you don't have enough time. Buying supplies the day before a storm often results in a shortage of items that could result in a lack of preparedness for you and your family.
