First Time At A Health Club? Make Sure You're Fully Aware Of Health Club Etiquette
If you're planning signing up to a health club in the coming year to help you lose
the weight you're thinking that you're going to be gaining over the Christmas period - something which a lot of people do - you might think that you simply head to down to your local health club, pay a membership fee and then you're free to make use of all of the facilities as and how you wish.
Whilst this is correct to a certain extent, there is a health club etiquette that you have to abide by but which you may not be aware of.
Each health club will have their own set of rules, stating what you are and aren't expected to do, which will no doubt be handed to you upon the completion of your membership and induction, where applicable, but there is also a set etiquette which relates to all health clubs.
One of the most important pieces of health club etiquette that you have to remember is that just because you've paid your membership, irrelevant of how much it may cost you, nothing in the health club is yours and as this is apparent, you should never act as though it is.
Don't stay on one machine for a substantial length of time (especially during busy periods when it looks as though there is a queue to use the machine - around 30 minutes is usually advised as a maximum upper time limit) and never put your towel or clothes on a machine whilst you go for a break, expecting for it to be still empty once you return.
It's also important that you keep a certain level of cleanliness and personal hygiene at all times, something which relates to various aspects.
For example, it's considered to be a major health club faux pas if you were to attend wearing unsuitable or unclean clothes, whether that's jeans and a jumper or work clothes that are full of mud.
Also, it's understandable that everyone sweats at the gym, but after you've used a certain piece of equipment, make sure that you give it a wipe down with your towel, removing any sweat or sweat marks.
One of the most annoying - and dangerous - breakages of health club etiquette is when a member uses a machine that involves the changing of weights and doesn't put the weights back to how they were when they began using the machine (which should be in the empty position).
Remember, you might be able to lift your own body weight several times over, but if someone comes on after you and tries to use the machine without checking what weights are on, they could do themselves a serious injury.
Joining a health club should allow you to lose weight and stay healthy in a fun and friendly environment and you're unlikely to run into any major problems as long as you understand the etiquette and don't, in any way, break it, even as a joke - you might think it's funny, but it's unlikely that anyone else will.
