First-aid squads must change with the times

Eventually they started an annual fund drive and that

, along with a donation from the township, have been the only means the organization has had to support itself for more than 50 years.

During the early MLB jerseysyears there was also very little regulation over emergency medical services. Anyone could put a siren on a station wagon and call it an ambulance.

That's not the case in the 21st century. EMS regulations are extensive, equipment and supply costs are high, fund-drive donations have evaporated (a third of what they were just eight years ago) and volunteers are scarce.

To counteract these negative trends, many EMS agencies in New Jersey have shifted from donation-funded, volunteer-only organizations to ones with paid staff that support themselves with patient billing. There are very few other options. EMS is not supported directly throughNFL jersey like other emergency services often are.

But before an EMS agency is allowed to bill they must first be licensed by the state (a rigorous process) and then establish agreements with insurance companies and Medicare/Medicaid. For many non-profit agencies billing revenue is not a replacement for fundraising, it's only a supplement because EMS works on a reimbursement business model.

Only patients actually transported to a hospital are billed and only about half of the patients that call 911 end up going to the hospital.

For example, if multiple patients with non-life-threatening injuries are treated but don't want to go to the hospital, there is no reimbursement for the crews' time or any equipment used. This is why emergency EMS agencies rarely break even.

So a few years ago we evaluated the trends mentioned above and decided to make some proactive changes to the way we operate to guarantee long-term stability. Our first move was to enhance our volunteer recruitment and retention programs. Volunteers are our core and will continue to be. But at the time there were schedule openings, so per-diem staff was hired to cover them. Not filling the crew schedule was not an option.
