Fishing On The Bayou
Growing up in the country, you would always hear folks talking about going hunting or fishing
. As kids, we didnt know any different, and were basically intrigued by the fact that we got to go fishing or hunting with Dad or Grand Dad, right? Well, fishing on the Bayou (or Swamps) is just a bit different than doing so anywhere else. It could be very dangerous at times, but as long as you did the things you were supposed to, you would be fine. Now, being a young boy, that wasnt always the easiest thing to do.
Fishing is just as much a mental game as it is anything else. Sure, you need to have some skills to actually get several fish to the boat at any given time, but mentality goes a long way with fishing. For instance, if you set out and have the mind set that if you dont catch many fish, it was a bad day well you are just setting yourself up for disaster. Think about it. You still get to go out into the wilderness, float down the water or even hang out on the bank side, and enjoy the sounds of nature, spending time with a loved one, and learning how to concentrate all at the same time and that is if you never catch a fish. Still sounds like a good day to me, and add catching some fish to the mix and it makes it so much better. That is what I mean by mentality. The bayou is no different.
The Bayou offers so many different things that it could be a completely different experience each and every time you went out fishing. Here in Southern Louisiana, which is known as Sportsmans Paradise, it is common to set out targeting a particular type of fish, and end up with 5 or 6 different species of fish. That is the point, there are so many different types of waters from freshwater, saltwater, and brackish water, that there are basically and unlimited amount of fish. Sure, saltwater fish generally stay in saltwater, and freshwater fish tend to stay in fresh water, but what about that brackish water? That is the water that is kind of a mixture of both saltwater and freshwater meaning fish that can live there can basically go anywhere, right? Well there you have it. When you through that fishing line out, you never know what might latch onto the end of the line.
In closing, that old clich line of a bad day fishing is still better than a good day at work is so true. People tend to take the little things for granted and never genuinely sit back and realize what they could experience if they would open up a bit. Fishing the Bayou, whether that be Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas it doesnt really matter. The point is that fishing is fishing, but the fishing experience is worth remembering so that you can pass along those same wonderful experiences to future generations.
