Fitness Training: Hey Mom-oholic, Youre Not Suffering From Mom-nesia Are You?
Full-time mothers are remarkable creatures and they have a lot in common with full-time
career professionals both in their devotion, expertise and the way they prioritise work before themselves. Yes, yes, its all about the baby, or the kids, or the kids and the baby. I am not debating the importance of their work but rather the sustainability of it all and the risk of permanent mom-nesia, i.e. forgetting the self. It is truly honourable to put yourself before others, but just like you are advised to put on your own oxygen mask before you help anyone else (in case of an airplane situation) neglecting yourself will inevitably limit your ability to be there for your kids.
What happens with an employee that endures excessive stress for a long period of time? They get burnt out. But long before they hit the wall, this stress will be affecting their energy levels, quality of sleep, self-confidence, anxiety levels, weight gain and mood. It all occurs gradually and not in one big hit, so both the person in question and their social circuit may not see the change as easily and risk deeming this state as normal. Mothers are susceptible to the exact same thing.
This doesnt by any means make the task at hand any easier but rather proves the point that you cant perform your best if youre not feeling your best. And there will never be a perfect time to get started, because there will always be something going on. However, if you dont break the mom-habit you may risk getting stuck in the mom-rut.
What you need to do is to spend time in order to free up more of your time. All those hours spent sitting down (perhaps watching tv) because you are exhausted or low on energy, all the tasks that are taking twice as long because youre to be inefficient at them (even though you know exactly what to do) or keep procrastinating that is where you will find the time that you are looking for.
Start by getting a babysitter every now and then to get out of the house for a few hours (preferable at least once per week) and aim to take an additional 30-60 min off for fitness training each day (it can be anything from taking a walk to attending an exercise class). In the first instance the new habit is more important than what you actually do, as long as you enjoy it and you do it for yourself and no one else. When you get it into a routine you can research more time-efficient options to make sure you get the most bang for the time spent. Its about you, your health and your lifestyle at the end of the day and life will always get in your way if you let it. Get the resources you need in order to make it happen and explain to your friends and family what you are trying to do, why it is important to you (and to them!) and how they can support you in this. Best of luck!
