Todays world of marketing and advertising has changed dramatically from the days of The Man In The Grey Flannel suit, when Madison Avenue dictated advertising and shaped taste across America. The Internet has changed all of that. Your web presence has become the centerpiece of your marketing efforts, whether you like it or not.

Researchers have found that more than 80% of Americans consult the web before making a purchase. While less than 5% of actual purchases are done on line, consumers use the web to review products, rate companies and compare prices.

This shift in consumer behavior has been massive and disruptive. Some businesses such as travel services have been nearly turned upside down. Others like auto sales have lost profitability because of the information now online that previously was not public.

How has this shift affected your business? There are four keys to successful web marketing.

First: Whats it all about, Alphie? Many company websites are a mashup of information, links and images. Its important to have a clear vision of what do you want your website to do. Do you want leads? To sell product on line? Enroll new members or patients, or collect contributions?

Whatever it is, you must keep the focus on the mission and dont get sidetracked.

Second, Just because you build it doesnt mean they will come. There are millions and millions of web pages and just having a site wont get you ranked in the search engines. If you dont show up in your market on page one, youre invisible. You must do adequate search marketing so your customers can find you easily, while monitoring what your competition is doing.

Third: Your reputation precedes you. You and your company have a web reputation. Comments, reviews and links are on other sites over which you have no control. Its important to review these other sites and ensure they are correct.

Fourth: Keep in touch. eMail marketing to customers and prospects that have interest in your products and services will yield results, but many companies dont collect and manage the e mail addresses of their customers.

Five: Mobile devices are the future. You should have a separate, mobile enabled site to reach those consumers so they can easily contact you and lay the groundwork for future technologies.
