Due to the fact the country is so vast, however, most of the attractions - irrelevant of where you are in America - are of many miles apart, meaning that whilst in between attractions there's likely to be beautiful natural beauty, it's not really a viable option to think you can visit one town or city and take in the surrounding attractions without any form of transport.

Just like anywhere else in the world, though, it isn't recommended that you simply jump in a car and take off and these five points should all be checked before you head off on your American journey.

1. Insurance - just like anywhere else in the world, when you're carrying out car hire Miami, for instance, you have to be fully insured by law.

The car hire company should provide insurance cover without you having to prompt them, but if it's not mentioned, ask to ensure that you have got full car insurance (and be sure it's Fully Comprehensive, too).

2. The suitability of the car - irrelevant of the type of car that you drive at home, the car that you hire when in America should suit your needs there and then. Anything too big and you're going to be paying too much and anything too small and it's going to be problematic fitting everyone - and all of your luggage - in.

3. The quality of the car- you might think it's an obvious point, but it's important that you give the car a quick look over to ensure that it's fit for purpose.

Take a look at the bodywork, everything inside and give it a quick drive around the forecourt. Make note of any noticeable damage or noises and let the car hire company know of them before you drive the car away.

4. A map - every one who hires a car in a foreign country needs to have at the very least a map of the local area to hand. It doesn't need to cost a fortune, but if you're driving around an area that you aren't familiar with, a map that you rely upon could be your shining light if you get lost.

5. Provisions - this may sound a little extreme, but it's strongly recommended that if you're planning on doing a lot of driving, especially if you'll be travelling on highways for any substantial length of time, you have some food, water and warm clothing at hand.

You might be in one of the most well-developed countries on earth, but if you break down in the middle of what seems like no where, something to eat, drink and to keep you warm will be very much welcomed.
