Five Questions To Ask Your Drop Ship Supplier
You have started your internet store and chosen a product to sell and now you want to find a drop ship supplier
. What questions should you ask so you can be sure the supplier is one who will help you grow your business?
1. How do I know you are a real drop shipper? Setting up in business using a drop ship supplier is a popular, low cost option allowing many of us to join the ranks of the internet entrepreneurs, but the number of businesses representing themselves as drop ship suppliers on the web is overwhelming. Many are scam artists, so it's important to know how to spot them. One indicator is a membership fee. Genuine drop shippers do not charge a membership fee, though they may make a charge for photographs or catalogues. Charging a fee usually indicates that the company will supply you with (sometimes very inaccurate) details of actual drop shippers and do not actually drop ship themselves. Actual drop shippers will ask for a tax ID number to confirm that you are a bona fide business.
2. How do I know how to describe your products? When products are supplied through a drop shipper it is likely you have never seen the items and may as a result have difficulty writing a good, thorough product description for your web site. Choose a supplier who provides you with good descriptions and preferably more than one photograph so you can ensure that your web site doesn't just look identical to many others selling the same product. You will want to rewrite the product descriptions to make them unique, but if you don't have a good description to work from this becomes very difficult.
3. How do I know what my return policy should be? In most cases your returns policy will depend on your drop shippers return policy. Make sure you are completely clear on what this is and what, as a result, you can offer your customers.
4. How do I know whether I can get these items any cheaper? To be sure you are getting the best price you can, check the drop ship suppliers SKU number. A Google search should tell you whether anyone else is selling the same item and at what price.
5. How will I know if you have an item in stock? The worst aspect of drop shipping is when you make a sale and then find you can't fulfil it because your supplier is out of stock. Choose a supplier who keeps you up to date with his inventory status. Many supply a daily or weekly spreadsheet showing which products are in or out of stock, some even indicate precise stock levels. Work out the best way to use this on your e-commerce platform and avoid selling products you can't supply.
There are two important relationships here, one between you and your customer, one between you and your supplier. As far as your customer is concerned, the supplier does not exist, so do your research well and choose carefully. A supplier who has terrible customer service, sends packages late or doesn't pack fragile items properly will not help you grow your business.
