Furnishings and Tables

Refurbishing your place doesn't require big expenses. A trip to a thrift store or visiting a mall on its Sales Day can help you bag valuable items for your home. Accents and accessories work too if you don't want to buy new furnishings. For example, chairs will instantly brighten up with a covering in a bold color. The sofa will have a quick and easy new look with some colorful throw pillows.

Tables can also often be refurnished, as long as they are made from real wood, and not pressed board. To refinish a table, begin by sanding the table lightly to rough the surface up, and then applying a coat of primer. Once the primer has dried, you will want to paint your pattern or main color over the primer. You can easily apply decoupage or other designs and decorations once the final coat of paint has dried for a unique look.

Liven Up Your Floor

Without having to install new flooring, you can brighten up your floors by decorating with area rugs. There are so many colorful and intricately designed area rugs to choose from, which are also available in various shapes, sizes and materials. It's best to use area rugs that go well with the existing furnishings or those that suit your home theme and color.

Solid colors are aplenty in area rugs. Therefore, if you wish to coordinate monotone colors, go for area rugs that have a plain or basic color instead of loud patterns or mixed tones. For example, a white area rug is perfect for white walls or furnishings; black area rug for a white or light-colored room; red, blue and other bright solid hues with a neutral-colored room.

Windows and Walls

Windows are an excellent tool to help you brighten a room. To make the most of the windows that are in your home, add some bamboo blinds and sheer curtains to the windows. Bamboo blinds are made to allow more light to come into the home, while still protecting your privacy. The blinds can be opened when you need more light, as well.
