There are five basic steps to choosing your perfect foot stool - whether it's a small, dainty affair that's used to rest your feet while watching TV and cross stitching, or a large ottoman that's designed to be fitted into your dressing room. It's just a question of knowing the five keys to what you need. Once you do, it's easy to choose the perfect foot stool, whether it's an off the shelf number, or custom ordered.

1. What do you want it for? - many people look at foot stools and then work out their 'functionality' afterwards, when in truth, the first thing they should consider is if they need the extra storage underneath first and look at the designs that incorporate this afterwards, or if storage isn't an issue and comfort is.

2. Size - do you want something that's dainty and is only useful as a foot stool, or is it to be used as occasional seating too - or is it to be used as a bench or even occasional coffee table? All of these questions need to be looked at to decide whether you need a regular foot stool or an ottoman or something bigger. The larger the foot stool, the more difficult it may be to store, so try to keep this in mind when shopping

3. Is it part of a set? - Some sofas and suites come with foot stools - in which case, is it worth buying a set instead of simply purchasing them separately? Or if you're upgrading your furniture and want to add to it, how difficult would it be to make a foot stool or ottoman of any kind blend with your furniture?

4. How will you store it? - Many people don't consider what they'll do with their foot stool when it's not in use - will it sit in the way or under your feet by your chair or sofa, or do you have somewhere else to store it? If you're buying a new sofa or suite, is there room to store it under the chairs or in some other place? Considering this will be a major step in narrowing down what size you can actually fit in your house, and will give you a better perspective of its uses and how often it will actually be used.

5. Is it really YOU - one of the final questions you have to ask yourself is whether the piece of furniture is 'really you'. If it's not, or you find yourself questioning whether you'll use it, you might want to look at a different design - one that speaks to you more. If you're looking for a foot stool and don't find one that fits with all of your needs, don't give in - there are companies that make bespoke foot stools that work well with most rooms.
