Five Things To Do To Ensure That Your Car Performs Well During Winter
As soon as winter hits, with the temperature dropping below freezing and the snow starting to fall
, many drivers begin to complain and become angry, venting their frustrations over the fact that it's so difficult to drive in the winter conditions and that their car hates the weather.
Now whilst there's no doubt driving in some winter conditions can be difficult and some cars don't perform as well as others in certain conditions, simply put, the problems are more often than not due to the driver, how they drive and how they look after their car than anything else.
Therefore, if you're not a fan of driving during the winter months and believe its your car that's the problem and the centre of your frustration, take a look at these five points and carry them out to ensure that your car performs as well as possible during winter.
1. Check the fluids and prepare them for winter - when winter starts, it's important that you open your bonnet, check all fluid levels and top them up - with a winter additive where appropriate - regularly.
Winter additives aren't needed for every fluid, but it's advised to put anti-freeze into your radiator to ensure it doesn't freeze up and undiluted screen wash into your windscreen wiper reservoir.
2. Wash the car regularly - with a mixture of snow, rain, sleet and road grit all likely to be coating your car during winter, it's important that you wash it regularly, as not only will it preserve the car's paintwork, but it will also ensure that you're given as clear of a view out of each window and mirror as possible.
3. Slow and steady wins the race - when the roads are ice or snow laden, you shouldn't be in any rush to get anywhere in your car and the simple rule is that you're likely to get to your destination quicker if you take things slowly.
Stop being so harsh on the accelerator, ease off on the brake, using your gears to slow down and just be a whole lot more smooth with your driving, especially when driving around corners.
4. Get your car a winter service - something that you can haggle to have included in the sale if you're just about to go out to Volvo dealers, for example, in the coming weeks, winter services are mini services that most dealerships carry out and prepare your car for winter.
They won't do anything that you can't do yourself, but if you're pushed for time or simply want to make sure that a professional takes a look at your car, spend the money (which varies but which is unlikely to be anywhere near the cost of a normal service) and book your car in for a winter service.
5. Only keep the necessities in your boot - if your car has to work harder in the snow because of a lot of extra weight in the boot, you're going to find it harder to control (and it will also use more fuel).
Remove anything unnecessary from your car's boot and you should see a difference in how your car handles and how much fuel it uses on every journey, irrelevant of the length.
