Five Tips for Using Brown Trout Lures – They Won't Be Able to Resist!

Although some people prefer to use live bait when fishing for Brown Trout

, many anglers I have fished with and talked to would definitely recommend using artificial lures to catch these cunning fish. It's all a matter of personal preference of course, but I can honestly tell you that I have seen tons of Browns caught from using trout fishing lures. If the presentation and conditions are right, I think this can be a very effective bait strategy to have them all over your line. The most important thing here is knowing which lures to use, and understanding when and why to use them. In this article we are going to talk about some great secrets for using brown trout lures, and we will talk specifically about how they can help your fishing success.

1. One of the best lures I have found for catching Brown Trout is a spoon. Spoons work very well on cloudy days where the water is murky. The reason for this is because when the visibility is low it is best to have bright-colored lures, and spoons such as the Magnum can be very brightly colored. Many of them contain a lot of shiny blue, green or silver patterns that reflect light well and are sure to catch the attention of the fish.

2. Many Browns love to feed at night, so sometimes it is best to go night fishing. Plan carefully when doing this. It is important to scope out the area where you are going to fish ahead of time during the day so you can be aware of the conditions and surroundings. You can use the bright-colored spoons we just talked about for night fishing. Some spoons glow in the dark, so these are a great option too as long as they will look real to the trout. This is generally not a problem, but I have seen some lures that appear very exaggerated and unnatural.

3. When fishing for Brown Trout in a river, try using some form of spinning lure. Spinners work great for Browns too because of their ability to catch the fish's attention. I suggest using gold or silver-plated spinners for maximum brightness. This can also be useful in lakes and other larger bodies of water where the lighting is poor and the trout's visibility is lower.

4. An important thing to remember about their behavior is that they prefer areas that are minimally exposed with high oxygen levels. Casting your lure near obstructed areas of a river or stream can be very effective. Lures also work well in dark pools or other low-lighted parts of the water, as this is where the typical Brown Trout hides out.

5. Sometimes these patient fish may not want anything to do with your lure at first, and if that's the case then you may have to back off for 15 minutes or so. If they are not biting right away then it does not mean you are in the wrong spot or that you are using the wrong lure. Keep in mind that Brown Trout will often feel out the situation for a little while before striking, so you can entice them by presenting a good lure and then taking it away for a little while. This creates a tease scenario for the fish and your lure becomes that much more desirable. Also, if the lure doesn't seem to be working by itself then you can try adding streamers or nymphs to the lure rig and using the same tease method above.
