Five Types Of Items People Often Trash Instead Of Selling
Cleaning out the basement, garage or attic often means throwing out some sentimental old junk that you haven't touched in years
. You've probably even forgotten about most of the stuff until you dig into the boxes to start organizing to make more space for more stuff. Sound familiar?
The next time you go on a cleaning spree or spring clean your storage area, keep these five item types in mind; clothing, toys and electronics, quilts, whatnots, and old crafting items. These items are often worth a lot of money on auction websites or in consignment shops.
Old Clothing Items - Vintage clothing often brings a pretty penny, especially on auction websites like eBay. Clothing that is more than 25 years old is sought-after by theatrical, movie and television wardrobe specialists as well as photographers who specialize in vintage photography.
Clothing dating back no more than 20 years, on the other hand, is great to sell to consignment shops. All of those skinny jeans and clothes you wore in high school or college may eventually come back in style, but can you still wear them? Probably not; your best bet is to sell them to a consignment store and make some money for new clothes.
Old Toys and Electronics - Toys, video games and other electronics sell to consignment shops very easily. They often bring a good price on eBay as well. Toys are great eye-catchers if you decide to have a yard sale or garage sale. Put old toys out front and center so children see them and convince parents to stop and look.
Old video games usually become collector items. Don't get rid of those until you thoroughly check them out to make sure you aren't just giving a rare game away. Those old games from the 80s and early 90s may be exactly what a video game collector is looking for.
Old Quilts - Homemade quilts are quickly becoming things of the past. Too few people in today's technologically fit world understand the importance of old homemade quilts; let alone how to make one. Museums of natural history often buy old quilts to display and protect.
Old Whatnots - All of those little glass figurines that sat on grandma's shelf or china cabinet may be worth a lot of money. Keep the most sentimental items if you wish, but pass the love and joy on to someone else who may be searching for these old items. Do your research first so you know how much each item is worth.
Old Crafting Items - Hand crafting is never out of style. People of all ages and backgrounds enjoy crafting supplies to some extent. Vintage crafting items, like old buttons, hoops, needles and other tools often sell for a lot of money.
Research Vintage Items
The next time you decide to clean out your storage area, keep those five item types in mind. Do your research to know what each item may be worth before you decide to randomly put it on an auction website or take it to a consignment shop. Those old items that have been sitting dormant and collecting dust may fatten your wallet.
