If you want to get fit, the first thing you might think of is to join a gym

. No matter whether it's a gym in Manchester city centre or in a small village in the Scottish highlands, joining a gym can seem like the most straightforward way to shed some pounds and increase your levels of fitness.

The issue is that some people struggle to find the time to go to the gym and therefore whilst it is recommended to try and set some time aside - maybe before or after work - and sign up to, for instance, a gym in Manchester if you're working in the centre, there are several other ways that that you can drop weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

1. Don't skip breakfast - although you'll no doubt be aware that breakfast is the most important meal of the day after having it drilled into you from an early age, not many people either believe this statement or understand why and therefore tend to skip breakfast, waiting until they're hungrier at a later time in the day.

However, breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it gives your metabolism a kick start, which in essence makes your metabolism work faster, breaking down the food you've eaten quicker, giving it less chance to turn into fat to be stored on your body.


2. Drink your water - it's reported by most health advisors, including Jane Clarke in her article in the Daily Mail on 9 February 2007 that everyone needs between two and two and a half litres of water a day to function best.

It might sound a lot on the face of it, but it works out at roughly eight half pints of water a day and the results can be seen within a matter of days, from increased energy and alertness to healthier looking skin and hair.

3. Remember your five fruit and veg - considering the World Health Organisation recommends that everyone eats 400 grams of fruit or veg a day and following a very lengthy and in-depth campaign by the NHS to eat '5 a day', it's surprising to hear that a study carried out by YouGov (published in March 2010) found that only 14 percent of adults in the UK consumed the recommended daily amount.

There might be some discrepancies to the exact health benefits to eating five portions of fruit or vegetables a day, but not one can argue that a healthy diet shouldn't consist of a balance of vegetables, some protein and some carbohydrates, meaning that five a day, whichever way you look at it, is going to be beneficial to a fitness program.

4. Walk everywhere - the quickest way to lose weight is to do what we were given two legs to do - walk.


It's recommended that you do thirty minutes of brisk walking each day but it you feel that you're going to struggle to fit this in, look at your daily routine and see if you can amend it.

For example, if you work in a town, park in a car park further away from your place of work or if you get the bus, get off a stop earlier - it's the simple things, but they all work.

5. A bit of what's bad for you, is good for you - finally, don't be so strict on what you eat that you're afraid to have something you really crave. You'll find you can concentrate better and are more dedicated if you have something you like, but which isn't particularly good for you, now and again. Just remember to not overdo it!
