Five things to avoid when designing a website

If you are looking to expand your business and market by going online, then by all means you should put an effort to make it look good. Unfortunately, visitors only have an attention span of a few seconds, so you need to be able to grab their attention, convey sufficient information and convince them to explore your website further. Unlike physical stores, there are no loud sales people to explain things clearly on a website, so information relayed must be crystal clear, concise and comprehendible.

If your website does not convert visitors to customers or have a high bounce rate because it does not look right, then this is a simple problem that can be fixed easily. Here are some web design tips on things to avoid when designing a website.

Avoid clutter. The more the merrier' does not work in the case of web sites. Text should be kept concise, avoiding the use of long boring paragraphs. If you wish to go into lengthy segments, then divide your web page into different sections, and space the content out well. Important points should be broken down into bullets or numbered lists to make it easier to read. Appropriate imagery should be used as well, with care taken to avoid unnecessary images.

Avoid loud colours and the use of many different fonts. Don't use many different colours and fonts. Choose one basic colour scheme, preferably something that is associated with the theme of your product/service, or are compatible with your company logo. Loud colours will tend to be distracting, and confusing fonts will just make the content difficult to read. Consistency in your fonts and colours are vital. Ensure that backgrounds will accentuate your fonts, instead of making them more difficult to read.

Avoid auto playing music. In an attempt to jazz up websites, certain owners turn to music to attract attention. This is a huge NO NO. It is loud and distracting, and not everyone shares the same taste in music. Also, if a visitor is checking out your website during work hours, this will definitely give the game away to his/her boss! Having music on your website will cause the site to take longer to load, frustrating potential customers.

Avoid Banners and Links. These can actually drive more people away from your site than they will attract to it. Pop-ups tend to be annoying, often causing people to simply close everything!

Avoid excessive Flash. Don't include detailed audio video presentations which take a long time to load, as people do not like to be kept waiting. Do not overdo things, as it is likely to just confuse the visitor, instead of encourage them to stay on the site.

To avoid making these mistakes, hire the services of a good website designer.
