Fix A Broken Smile With Dental Crowns Or Dental Bridges

In the past, a broken, chipped or missing tooth could be viewed as a serious problem

. At one point, the only way that you could restore your smile was to be fitted for dentures. Thanks to modern dentistry, there are a few different options available to you to ensure that your dentist will be able to restore your smile. Some of the most popular options for restoring your smile are dental crowns and bridges. If you find yourself in a situation where you will need your dentist to repair one or more of your teeth, don't worry. He or she will be able to use crowns or bridges to effectively restore your smile.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is installed on top of a tooth to restore its size, shape, strength and/or appearance. Once the crown is installed, it will fully cover up the visible portion of your tooth. To install a crown, your dentist will begin the process by anesthetizing your tooth and then filing it down. This will make enough room for the crown to fit in your mouth comfortably. Once the tooth is filed down, your dentist will then take an impression of the tooth. This impression will then be sent to a dental lab, where your permanent crown will be created in between two and three weeks. In between appointments, your dentist will fashion a temporary crown for you to wear to fill the gap in your teeth.

Once your permanent crown arrives from the dental lab, your dentist will do a final check to make sure the fit and coloring are correct. After this, he or she will cement it into place. Once it is installed, it will look and function like a normal tooth would in your mouth.

Dental Bridges

Unlike dental crowns, a dental bridge is designed to replace a missing tooth that is lost to decay or injury. A bridge is made up of two crowns that support a replacement tooth or teeth on either side. To install a bridge, your dentist will begin by applying local anesthesia and then filing down the two teeth that will be receiving crowns. After this, he or she will take an impression of the area and send it off to a dental lab. You will be given a temporary bridge to wear during the two to three weeks between appointments.

Like a crown procedure, your dentist will then check if the fit and coloring are correct once your bridge arrives. If everything checks out, he or she will then permanently cement the bridge to your teeth. With the proper care, your bridge can last as long as 15 years.
