Fix My Credit - What Should I Do?
The first step to fixing your credit is to find out what is on it
. You can get a free copy of your report with each major bureau according to the Fair Credit Reporting Act. It is important to get a copy from all three bureaus; Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. It is not unusual for your report to vary widely from bureau to bureau.
Once you have your three reports you need to review them and identify the negative items. Congress has passed legislation that provides you the consumer the right to dispute any item on your report that you feel is inaccurate. In other words you can dispute any item with the bureaus.
To dispute an item you must write a dispute letter. In this letter you need to include the item you are disputing, the reason for the dispute, and any other pertinent documentation. You then need to mail this letter to each credit bureau. In other words you will mail three dispute letters, one to each bureau.
Once the bureaus deem your dispute valid is when they will conduct an investigation. During an investigation the bureau will contact the original lender and ask them to verify the debt. If the debt can not be verified then it must be removed from your credit report.
The hard part is getting you dispute deemed valid and having an investigation take place. This is because the credit bureaus must spend money that would other wise be profit to conduct investigations. Therefore they have come up with effective and sometimes unlawful tactics to handle disputes.
The bureaus have been fined over and over again by the FTC for not complying with Federal Law. It is often thought that the credit bureaus are somehow managed or run by the government. This is completely false! The credit bureaus are private businesses just like your local grocery store.
These tactics the bureaus use often frustrate individuals into giving up on fixing their credit. Additionally it is very common for people to turn to the professionals once they encounter the bureaus and their stall tactics.
You can file a dispute letter yourself; however expect a letter in response asking for more information. You don't need to hire anyone but you will need to be persistent and stay organized.
If you do hire someone that is an excellent choice because there is hardly a more important number in your life than your credit score, this number directly determines the quality of life you will live! You can hire a professional at a very affordable rate. You should expect a $100 down payment and then a monthly payment somewhere in the range of $50 to $100.
You should expect it to take at least 6 months. Avoid any company that wants a large amount of money upfront. With a company all you have to do is tell them what items on your report you want to dispute, sit back, and wait for the investigation result letters or removal letters.
