Fix Your Golf Swing Tempo
Before we go any further we first must define what "golf tempo" really is
. This is the fluid motion, speed, and rate of your swing as you go back, then through the ball, and finish the swing. The best golf swings have always been those with great tempo and most golfers that play very well you will hear them mention that they had great tempo or timing that day in their swing.
A golf swing tempo ties in a lot of things your stance, arms, hips, shoulders, backswing, downswing and release. But if you have this all in one motion then your tempo will be perfect. Staying focused and having a good mind set is the key to a good golf swing tempo. Let yourself relax and swing the club for practice just to get a feel, try to visualize your swing with best golf clubs.
To get to a proper golf tempo you need to make sure you feel very relaxed and understand that it should take you about twice as long to finish your back swing as the rest of the swing should take you. So if the golf swing is 1.5 seconds long your back swing would be a full second of that and the rest would be a 0.5 seconds of that. This should make sense since the force to hit the ball is created from the top of the backswing and down through to the impact position.
If I ever get to where I am trying to kill the ball...the very next swing I think smooth all the way. No aggressive or jerky motion for the entire swing with callaway diablo edge irons. This usually gets my swing back in the groover right away, instead of the dreaded snow ball effect with your game, getting worse and worse.
The key to good Tempo is maintaining it on every full shot! Be consistent in how fast and how short or long your golf swing is. Nick Price is often pointed out for his quick pace that has served him up success for multiple years. And the sweet swings of Stuart Appelby, Ernie Els, Freddie Couples, have been the envy of golf wannabes everywhere. Observe an LPG tournament sometime, and you will see some of the finest examples of perfect tempo that there is. The golf swing with diablo edge irons is unique in that we start from a static position. Getting the backswing started is often where amateurs unravel. They don't "trigger" the start of their swing the same way every time. Heck, most don't even have a trigger..
There is another element of tempo and that is your rate of play. If you hit ball-after-ball on the driving range, going faster and faster, this will actually transfer to your golf swing and it will be very difficult to maintain a smooth swing tempo. The next time you are at the driving range take a look around you. You will likely notice that the better players are taking their time while it looks like the beginners are in a race to finish their buckets!
