Nearly every computer has a problem that is causing it to slow down
. Most of these problems are the result of problems with the registry. Many people see errors every day warning them of registry errors, disk errors, memory problems and corrupt files and just choose to ignore them. Doing this will store up trouble.
You need to fix your computer before it gets any worse, otherwise one day you will turn it on and windows will not start. Once this happens you will have to go through the lengthy process of installing windows again.
When you first start to use your computer it will run fast. This is because there are a very limited amount of programs and software installed.
As increasing numbers of programs, drivers and files are installed the computer will slow down and registry errors and corruption will creep in as entries are left behind for software and drivers which are no longer installed.
You can fix these errors with a few simple steps.
1. Revert to classic theme Under display options it's possible to revert to the classic Windows 95 theme in Windows XP. This greatly limits the amount of memory and power required to handle the theme and is a simple way to fix a slow computer with a XP installation. The classic theme is often labelled as "ugly" but after a while you'll appreciate its simplicity and the fact that it's so streamlined compared to the newer themes.
2. Defrag Windows XP has a great defrag tool built right into the system, accessible via the Control Panel. Run a defrag every few days (it's possible to even schedule the defrag to run automatically) and your system will remain nice and snappy. Your first defrag may take a while but once you start defragging consistently each one will be much faster.
3. Limit startup processes Within Windows XP it is possible to limit the applications/processes that startup when you boot the computer. Make sure you prevent applications such as MSN Messenger or Steam opening straight away and it'll stop processes from taking your memory even when you're not actively using the program.
