Fix the "This File Does Not Have a Program Associated With It" Error - Fix this error fast

Sometimes when you are running games and programs they just refuse to start or run anymore. There can be several reasons for these errors, from corrupt files, registry corruption to an incompatibility with the program with updated windows files.

One error in particular is becoming very common on both windows vista and windows 7 when trying to start games. The error you see is this when you try to run a game:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set associations control panel."

Most people will take one look at that and have absolutely no idea what it means and call out a technician to fix it. Your computer may be away for weeks and it may cost you a tidy sum to fix. The truth is this is usually a relatively easy error to fix once you know what is behind it and you can do it in minutes.

This particular error is caused by one corrupt file in the windows registry. This corruption can be caused by several things.

#1 The computer not being shut down correctly, such as when the power is suddenly lost or when the computer is turned off from the power switch. Try to avoid this.

#2 Malware has corrupted the registry. if this is the case the error will return quickly after you fix it.

#3 Errors have built up in the registry over time and corrupted the file.

To fix this error you need to recreate a missing file called IsShortcut in the registry.

Here is how you fix this problem so you can run your games again.

#1 Open the registry editor by typing in regedit from the windows command prompt. To do this go to start, then run and type in regedit.

#2 Go to where it says HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT press the plus sign next to it and scroll down to where it says Lnkfile.

#3 In the right hand side of the pane you need to create a new string value called "IsShortcut" without the quotes. To do this right click inside the right hand pane, then from new select string value. Do not select any other option or this will not work. Then copy and paste this value exactly as it is here. Do not change anything from upper case or lower case.

Once you have done this close the registry editor and your games should now start without a problem. restart your computer and then run a game and you should no longer see the " this file does not have a program associated with it: error.
